We are excited to announce that a Madison4Kids grant of $784 helped fund Easter Seals Camp Wawbeek camperships to help two low income children from Dane County with cognitive and physical disabilities. Camp Wawbeek provides a life-changing experience for campers who participate in a unique camping experience that promotes independence, challenge and social skills.

Camp Wawbeek offers campers a chance to be on their own in a safe, nurturing, outdoor environment, providing them with an opportunity to interact with peers who share similar challenges. Since many of these children and teens may be the only ones in their school with a disability, Camp Wawbeek gives them a social network of support for years to come. For many of the campers, these friendships last a lifetime.

“Our son felt good getting to know another child who also has autism. They were able to discuss things they have in common and how they deal with problems with their neurotypical peers,” said one camper’s parent.

Not only does Camp Wawbeek benefit the campers, but it also gives parents and caregivers much-needed relief from around-the-clock care. Time off from intensive care-giving duties that may cause physical, mental and emotional stress allows parents time to relax and spend some time with their other children.

Another camper’s parent stated, “She just enjoys being independent from her family and doing her own thing. For me I get the break from AM and PM care that no one else does for me. I get to have time to breathe is the best way I can describe it. It rejuvenates the soul knowing she is well cared for, having a great time and I can breathe. That is priceless to me. THANK YOU!”

Camp Wawbeek  gives campers the opportunity to participate in activities they may not have the chance to experience anywhere else. Campers are encouraged to try new recreational activities such as archery, fishing, rope adventure courses and a zip line. Campers also enjoy the brand-new swimming pool, cookouts, dances, pontoon boat rides and camping out under the stars. All of the activities at Camp Wawbeek are 100% accessible and campers are encouraged to challenge themselves through new experiences and set goals for independence at camp and at home.

“Alex feels more independent after camp. He is very happy and sings songs and does some chants he learned. Camp is helping him to know he can be more independent and increases his confidence,” said one happy camper’s parent.
